Environmental impacts will be kept at a minimum through careful field sampling methods (for the collection of water, moss and soil samples). Water sampling will be carried out via grab sample from the middle of the lake (by helicopter in the Kimmirut study domain) or from shoreline (by ATV site access in the Iqaluit study domain). These methods do not require any motorized equipment operation in the water. Sampling of moss will be carried out sustainably, with consideration for the moss colony's survival. Soil samples will be collected using a small fixed volume core (100 mL) to ensure minimal disturbance to surrounding vegetation. The researchers will be spending a limited amount time at each site (~5 min for surface water collection and ~15 min for moss and soil collection). Traveling within the Iqaluit domain on ATVs, will use existing trails where available to minimize the damage.
