Project Description:
Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is pursuing activities to develop, test, and evaluate hyperspectral imagery (HSI) exploitation techniques for Arctic Surveillance applications. These activities are conducted in the context of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Joint Arctic Experiment (JAE), a Canadian Joint Operation Command (CJOC) activity. Primary objective of the JAE 2018 Iqaluit Trial is to assess the utility of reflective and thermal hyperspectral imagery for wide area automated reconnaissance in a search and rescue context, in an Arctic environment. Search and Rescue (SAR) component of the JAE will include placement of a set of targets simulating a SAR operation (aircraft parts, parachutes, civilian clothing and camping equipment, etc.) on the ground of the selected test site and their retrieval at the conclusion of the activity. These targets may remain on site for the duration of the activity; which is scheduled to occur 30 July - 10 August 2018. The main road will be used to access the test site. All-terrain vehicles (ATV) will be used to transport the items from the main road to the test site. The test site was selected for imagery collection due to the easy access from a nearby road, and relatively large distance to the city. All personnel will overnight in Iqaluit for the duration of the activity.
