Project Description:
High-latitude fjords act as conduits of terrestrially-sourced nutrients to the sea, and are key regions for marine biological production that supports important fisheries. Physical, chemical and biological processes interact – both in the water column and in underlying sediments – to influence the the supply of nutrients not only to algae growing in the fjords, but also the flow of biological important elements to the open ocean. The aim of the project is to collect pilot data for nutrient cycling studies out of the Canadian High Arctic Research Station (CHARS), Cambridge Bay. Samples and data will be collected using a small boat, along a transect along the fjord away from land. Physical water column data (temperature and salinity) will be collected using sensors, and water samples will be collected for geochemical analysis (major and trace nutrients, and stable isotopes). Additional water samples will be collected from accessible streams and rivers that flow into the fjords. The water samples will be filtered in the laboratory at CHARS and exported to the UK for analysis.
