Community-Driven Monitoring of Sea Ice and Eider Duck Populations around the Belcher Islands, Nunavut (148969)
Proposal Status: Conformity Determination Issued
Project Overview
Type of application: Renewal
Proponent name: Joel Heath
Company: Arctic Eider Society
Schedule:
Start Date: 2019-01-05
End Date: 2019-12-31
Operation Type: Annual
Project Description:
Our objective is to understand how changing sea ice conditions influence the movements and population dynamics of eider ducks. Our ongoing use of time lapse photography and Inuit field surveys have led to the implementation of a multi-scale community-based research and monitoring program that allows us to simultaneously monitor the dynamics of sea ice formation and habitat use by eiders around southeastern Hudson Bay.

Material Use
Equipment
Type Quantity Size Use
snowmachine 2 standard Most work will take place as a part of day trips from the community. Infrequent overnight trips may be made to the Environment Canada research camp (55° 49.361 N, 79° 53.925 W) to facilitate travel to nearby polynyas and floe edge by snowmachine.
Fuel Use
Type Container(s) Capacity UOM Use
Gasoline 6 5 Gallons We will have a small amount of gasoline for the snowmachines. We have a spill response plan and will have a spill kit with us at all times.
Gasoline 4 4 Liters We will have a small amount of white gas for cooking. We have a spill response plan and will have a spill kit with us at all times.(Important: The online system does not allow me to insert Other fuel type so I checked gasoline.)
Hazardous Material and Chemical Use
Type Container(s) Capacity UOM Use

Water Consumption
Daily Amount (m3) Retrieval Method Retrieval Location
3 Melted snow is used for drinking and washing purposes only. Water is only used for drinking and doing camping dishes. Water is obtained by melting snow or ice. Dish water will be disposed more than 150 m from any body of water.
Waste and Impacts
Environmental Impacts
We expect our impact to be minimal. We will be using a small amount of fuel (gas, kerosene, and white gas), and have a spill contingency plan and spill kit available should a spill occur.
Waste Management
Waste Type Quantity Generated Treatement Method Disposal Method
Greywater Gray water will be produced from cleaning dishes. No additional treatment procedures. Gray water and sewage will be disposed of in sumps more than 150m from any water body and backfilled before leaving camp.
Sewage (human waste) Sewage from up to 4 people daily. No additional treatment procedures. Gray water and sewage will be disposed of in sumps more than 150m from any water body and backfilled before leaving camp.
Non-Combustible wastes Solid waste from daily usage of up to 4 people. No additional treatment procedures. Solid waste will be returned to landfill in Sanikiluaq.
