Thermal State of Permafrost (149119)
Proposal Status: Conformity Determination Issued
Project Overview
Type of application: Amendment
Proponent name: Jami Warrick
Company: University of Alaska Fairbanks, Geophysical Institute
Schedule:
Start Date: 2019-05-01
End Date: 2024-05-01
Operation Type: Annual
Project Description:
We have a research site located approximately 1 km south of the runway at Isachsen, Ellef Ringnes Island (78.7833°N, 103.55°W). At this site we have a small tripod with a data logger and sensors to measure air temperature, snow depth, two soil temperature arrays with measurements to 1 meter, and soil moisture sensors at 3 depths. In the summer of 2013 we visited the site and were able to collect data going back to 2007. In addition during this visit we made upgrades and repairs to the site including installation of temperature sensors down to 3 meters and installation of iridium satellite communications equipment so we are now able to collect the data remotely. The data is available in near-real-time via our website (www.permafrostwatch.org). We would like to keep this site operating as long as possible to collect valuable data on the permafrost temperatures in this area. We have received additionally funding for this project and plan to visit this site again in 2016.
Summary of Modifications:
Prior project description: We have a research site located approximately 1 km south of the runway at Isachsen, Ellef Ringnes Island (78.7833°N, 103.55°W). At this site we have a small tripod with a data logger and sensors to measure air temperature, snow depth, two soil temperature arrays with measurements to 1 meter, and soil moisture sensors at 3 depths. Update: No modifications beyond the original site/equipment description were made to the site, nor are modifications planned. Research equipment remains on site, and we are requesting permission to continue this project. As noted in the project description, all data collected is available in near real-time via www.permafrostwatch.org. The next site visit is planned for summer of 2020, and the project is funded through 2024 at a minimum. Permits and licenses will be renewed as needed, including the Scientific Research License via the Nunavut Research Institute (formerly #N2011N0028).
