Project Description:
GENICE is a 4-year Genome Canada funded project aiming to utilize microbial genomics, petroleomics and sea ice geophysics to understand the role of microbial biodegradation of hydrocarbons in Canada’s Arctic Marine environment. The outcomes from the GENICE project will inform emergency response and preparedness in the Arctic region regarding the potential of microbial biodegradation of spills. Western Hudson Bay communities experience high volumes of ship traffic due to vast mineral exploration projects in the region. For example, in Chesterfield Inlet, it is estimated that the average change in shipping activity between 1990-2000 and 2011-2015 increased by 2000 – 4120 km. This project focuses on generating a database containing detailed hydrocarbon contaminant profiles (e.g. diagnostic ratios or “fingerprints”) and chemical concentrations in sediments, water and benthic invertebrates within the Kivalliq transportation corridor. Genomics profiling will be conducted in sediments and water. Baseline monitoring and fingerprinting of high traffic areas such as this are essential if one is to be able to discriminate between natural background and contaminating petroleum compounds and thereby determine if natural attenuation (possibly aided by nutrient addition) as a mitigation strategy is feasible should a spill ever occur.
