Project Description:
Exercise Bengal North 2020 is an annual saturation training exercise designed to maintain 439 Sqn aircrew proficiency in all aspects of austere winter flying. It is vital to maintain these skills on a continual basis as well as offer challenges to the crews by conducting extended transits and winter approaches and landings outside of their usual AOR. 439 Sqn will operate out of CYAB airport for the duration of the Ex conducting two training flights per day and will stay in local accommodations in Arctic Bay. The cadet barracks will be used for crew swaps in Iqaluit. The exercise will be carried out from CYFB, Iqaluit if weather does not permit crews to fly to Arctic Bay. Timeline – Arrival JTFN AOR on 11 March 2020 at CYFB; termination of the exercise and departure on 17 march 2020. Our intent is to carry out an additional transit from CYFB to CYAB stopping at the following airports only for refuelling and conducting our training EX out of CYAB (weather permitting); DEPARTURE CYFB CYVM - Qikiqtarjuaq Airport, CYCY – Clyde River CYIO – Pond Inlet ARRIVAL CYAB The transit between CYFB (Iqaluit) and CYAB (Arctic Bay) will pass the following National Parks as detailed: Transit CYFB to CYVM – Overflight of AUYUITTUQ National Park Transit CYIO to CYAB – Overflight of SIRMILIK National Park Requesting authority to fly 500ftAGL (as opposed to 2000ftAGL) as the climatic conditions and illusions at this lower altitude in mountainous terrain would give exposure to valuable training situations.
