Project Description:
This letter explains our plans to perform archaeological survey and excavation on Igloolik Island. The goal of the proposed fieldwork is to understand the distribution of ancient Tuniit camps (4000-1000 B.P.) While previous archaeological fieldwork on Tuniit sites has taken place on Igloolik Island, the work has been isolated and it has been decades since these sites have been re-examined. We will not be camping but will stay in a house in Igloolik (August 1-20), where I will lead of team of 4 experienced field assistants from McGill University, two Iglulingmiut (with support from Inuit Heritage Trust), and a bear monitor hired through Igloolik Hunters and Trappers (a total of 8 participants), to survey and map all Tuniit features on Igloolik island. In exceptional circumstances, minor excavations may take place to identify the age and preservation of newly discovered Tuniit houses. Sod cover will be removed from these potentially excavated features (we anticipate a maximum of ten 1 metre test pits on the island) and will be replaced once the test units have been re-filled. Archaeological excavations will be small scale and will include the complete excavation of three early Tuniit tent rings. This fieldwork will overlap with our planned “Archaeology as Applied Learning” educational program, where local high school students will have the opportunity to meet with us three times a week and receive training in archaeology and lessons on local history. Many educational activities are planned for the program, including Tuniit stone tool making lessons and run-throughs of archaeological sites using virtual 3D goggles.

Waste and Impacts
Environmental Impacts
The only anticipated garbage are pieces of paper and recycled string from archaeological excavation grids, and waste from our lunches. We plan to collect these materials each day from site, to be disposed of in town in the designated garbage pick up location at our residence, for disposal in the local dump.
