Project Description:
The Spence Bay Hunters and Trappers Association (SBHT), based in Taloyoak, is leading efforts to establish the Aviqtuuq Inuit Protected and Conserved Area (AIPCA) to protect Boothia Peninsula in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut. The SBHT wishes to include the protection of archaeological and other cultural sites within the scope of the AIPCA. An archaeological field program proposed for 2022 will be based out of Taloyoak using ATVs and boats to reach target areas for archaeological survey and site recording during excursions of one to a few days. The crew will consist of Eric Damkjar, Jimmy Oleekatalik, and members of the AIPCA Guardian program -- a crew of four to six people at any one time. The intent is to locate and make as-found records of archaeological sites, including location, condition, description, interpretation, mapping, and photographs suitable for completion of archaeological site forms and a permit report to the Department of Culture and Heritage, Government of Nunavut. Inuit Owned Lands may be included within the scope of the archaeological survey.
