Project Description:
Purpose of the modification The current situation at CFS Alert is that the Station is currently at capacity in both landfarm designated areas until remediation of contaminated soils is complete expected summer of 2026/27. Principally, these locations are known as ALT-10 and ALT-12 of the current Water Licence. Several projects related to infrastructure are planned this upcoming year and are known to be located on contaminated sites of which soil will be required to be removed. Currently there is no storage for near term construction projects or future spills, should they occur. Thus the requirement for a temporary storage solution on existing contaminated ground. Description of the Modification DND is purposing a 1,000m3 capacity temporary contaminated soils storage, this would allow existing contaminated soil piles that are not currently contained to be place in a safe storage space, until the new (in design phase) large storage space is construct North East (NE) of the Alert’s Runway. The overall foot print of this proposed temporary land farm is 33m x 43m x 1.75m in height and located 200m West by North West (WNW) of the “Millionaire’s Dump” (ALT-6) located on previous contaminated ground, approximately 25m off the old dump’s access road. The design will be of similar construction to the already approved “Day Tank” contaminated soils storage which is located on the station proper (ALT- 12).

Environmental Impacts
Currently an already altered and prepared site with roads to and from location. Location of proposed land farm in being built on an already contaminated site adjacent to a closed dump (Alt 6). Location of proposed land farm is not located with 30m of a water body Appropriate sediment and erosion measures will deployed on site during construction. The ground beneath the contaminated soil will be lined with several layers of impermeable rubber (see attached pdf of engineered drawing).
