Project Description:
The municipality of Baker Lake would like to expand their existing landfill to accommodate current and future growth. We are proposing to increase the existing landfill by 6,000 square meters in the south and eastern direction. The existing landfill is included under the existing water License 3BM BAK1526. This water license amendment application is only for changes to the landfill and there will be no changes to water supply or wastewater operations. Potable water processed by the Water Treatment Facility (WTF) is withdrawn from Baker Lake using a submerged intake structure located approximately 120 metres offshore. Under the existing license, the Licensee is authorized to use a maximum of 100,000 cubic meters of water annually. On a daily basis, the water withdrawn is not to exceed 299 cubic meters/day. The Sewage Disposal Facility (SDF) operated by the Hamlet is located approximately 1.2 kilometers north of the community and encompasses a total area of approx. 8.3 hectares. The sewage is collected by trucks, transported and off-loaded onto one of two gravel pads at the facility which flows downslope to a 1,000 cubic meter holding cell. Effluent eventually flows from the holding cell into a lagoon lake and further to Finger Lake. The Solid Waste Disposal Facility (SWDF) also operated by the Hamlet consists of a fenced disposal area for municipal solid waste with an area of approximately 25,000 square meters. Included in this area is a separate area for bulk material, hazardous waste and waste oil. The Facility is located near the south shore of Finger Lake and adjacent to the SDF. The entire SWDF is unlined and runoff from the Facility drains directly into Finger Lake and Sewage Treatment Wetland.
